A full redesign of the instrumentation panel for a Cessna 182 to improve flight efficiency, ergonomics, and reliability. Key upgrades included repositioning the compass to eliminate magnetic interference and lag, designing a custom L-bracket to mount a Molex USB Type-A/C port, and removing redundant analog systems in favor of a modern iPad-based Garmin Flight Instruments setup.
The layout of the Airspeed Indicator, Horizontal Situation Indicator, and Course Deviation Indicator were reconfigured for a more intuitive and safer flight experience. Engine monitoring capability was enhanced by integrating a new JPI 730 Piston Advisory Instrument to replace aging hardware. An ELT Switch was also added to the panel.
This redesign modernizes the cockpit layout while improving situational awareness, reliability, and overall pilot experience.
- Compass repositioned — eliminates magnetic interference
- Custom L-bracket — Molex USB Type-A/C port
- iPad-based Garmin Flight Instruments
- JPI 730 Piston Advisory Instrument
- Reconfigured ASI · HSI · CDI layout
- ELT Switch added

Build Log
Document Existing Panel
Performed a full survey of the existing Cessna 182 panel layout using Artec Studio 3D scanning to capture precise geometry, component positions, and spatial constraints. Documented all existing instruments, switches, and wiring runs.
Identify Upgrade Requirements
Evaluated the existing layout against modern avionics standards and pilot ergonomics best practices. Identified redundant analog systems, interference sources, and opportunities to improve situational awareness and reliability.
SolidWorks Design
Designed the full replacement panel in SolidWorks using the 3D scan data as a reference. Modeled all cutouts, mounting features, and the custom L-bracket for the Molex USB Type-A/C port. Material specified as 5052 H32 Aluminum at .100" thickness.
Fabrication
Panel fabricated from 5052 H32 Aluminum sheet at .100" thickness. All cutouts and mounting holes machined to engineering drawing specifications.
Mount and Wire Components
All avionics and instruments mounted and wired to the new panel. iPad mount, Garmin Flight Instruments, JPI 730, repositioned compass, and Molex USB port all installed and connected.
Test and Validate
Completed panel installed in aircraft and validated against all design objectives. Compass accuracy confirmed, all instruments operational, and pilot ergonomics verified in-cockpit.
Version 2 — Currently In Fabrication
A second iteration of the panel is currently being fabricated incorporating lessons learned from Version 1 and additional upgrades requested after initial flight testing.
- New ELT Switch integration
- Minor instrument cluster repositioning for further ergonomic refinement
- Upgrade to glide slope capability
